Schottenstein's Value City kicks long time 17 year disabled employee to the
curb. September 11th is a date not only known for the terrorist attacks, it
is now known as the day of theft by a corporation from its employee.
In a twist of ignorance yesterday Nancy Rothshild was told by her manager,
that Value City in Swansea Illinois, (A Schottenstein owned company)that she
had been terminated over a month ago. She was out on disability during this
alleged termination.
Ms. Rothschild who was injured in April 2005 while lifting heavy boxes over
50 lbs at work, filed a workers compensation claim that was denied because
an employee who was not even at work the day of the injury stated that the
injury did not occur at Value City. That employee's name has not been
provided to Ms. Rothschild's counsel as of yet, which when divulged will
result in litigation for slander, vexatious refusal and insurance fraud.
Travelers Insurance has denied the claim based upon this alleged statement
by an unknown employee.
While disabled for the back injury sustained at work and supported by three
doctor evaluations and an MRI, Ms. Rothschild was told that she required
surgery which kept her on disability until tomorrow 09-12-05. Value City
also engaged in not providing written statements to the health insurance
carrier Blue Cross Blue Shield concerning her wages while employed at Value
City. To this date Ms. Rothschild has received no disability benefits
through worker compensation or the health insurance company through the
non-performance of Value City, and has denied payment of medical bills
relating to the workers compensation issue and other medical bills. Ms.
Rothschild also states that the Value City store owes her three weeks
vacation pay and two personal paid days. It appears that Value City in
failing to inform Ms. Rothschild that she had been terminated has disallowed
her from getting unemployment benefits as she did not know she had been
terminated for over a month.
When the manager at the Swansea Illinois Value City was questioned about
when Ms. Rothschild was terminated he stated he did not recall and it was
sometime in early August. Ms. Rothschild had received no letter of
termination, no phone call or other communication that suggested she no
longer worked for the company, also no financial severance or accrued
vacation pay or personal day pay. Ms. Rothschild has several medical issues
that are covered by her current health insurance and now she will not have
any insurance due to Value City's illegal and unethical activities in
"conservation of financial interests". Ms. Rothschild also has stated that
Value City managers have gone out of their way to make working at the store
very difficult in not allowing her the doctor ordered use of a stool when
her legs become weak, access to fluids while on the floor, and other issues
relating to her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Ms. Rothschild stated that
other former employees that were full time and union members have been
"weeded out" in favor of part time employees with no benefits. Ms.
Rothschild's dilemma is not the only one at the Swansea Illinois store,
there are others which have resulted in law suits filed against the company.
The Union Local 881 UCFW has done nothing as their business agent is
spineless and dues that have been paid should have been saved for buying
bread and paying her water bill. Ms. Rothschild has had no relief as the
shop steward is too busy kissing up to Value City for fear of loosing her
job. The business agent is useless also in enforcing already negotiated
contract gaurentees.
Ms. Rothschild over the course of the past two years has made complaints to
the Corporate Offices in Columbus Ohio with no resolve. It appears that the
Schottenstein's empire including Value City Arena and Schottenstein
Convention Center are funded by the wages withheld and benefits denied of
its employees. Remember that next time you attend a concert at one of their
venues that a disabled 49 year old woman was kicked to the curb when after
17 years of service she required her insurance be used, and that under
federal law she be treated as an equal under the Americans With Disabilities
Act. I would strongly suggest that persons boycott this group of blood
suckers and their money funnels until they start paying for the people that
they used up. One caveat, with the Schottensteins being a Jewish owned
company doing many good works in the community let it be known that Ms.
Rothschild is also a Jew, they are equal opportunity and will screw anyone.
Notice was sent that Ms. Rothschild would return to work at her $10.00/hour
(after 17 years of service) serving the public at the expense or her health
physically and emotionally on 9-12-05. She was fully prepared for the
promotion of the Value City illusion of helping people in the community when
the doctors released her. She states that she cannot any longer lie to the
public. The merchandise sold by Value City is less than quality, the return
policy is a joke where they take back used underwear and bathing suits
re-racking for resale. The building in which the store is housed has its
back wall severally cracked and could fall in at any moment. The City of
Swansea Illinois refuses to enforce the safety issue of this building
fearing loss of revenue if the store closes. Customer Service is almost
nonexistent where by customers are treated in a not equal manner. The store
security and theft prevention are also widely known in the community to be
not only lax but almost nonexistent. An illusion to look good to the
community while she is being denied what she has worked so hard for over the
past 17 years is ridulous. Due to the snake like management of this store
she now has lost her good credit which scored better than 90% of Americans
earlier this year down to a woman harassed by creditors because of insurance
companies not paying what they should, and Value City withholding her earned
monies. Value City just does not want her back because now she is an
employee who has permanent disabilities caused directly or indirectly
through her employment at that store. She has no power on in her home, her
daily bills are late, her credit card is cancelled because it is late over
60 days in payment all while waiting for the good Schottenstein family of
companies to take care of her. Now she has had a first hand look at how
they operate. It would have been so easy to shut her up, just do what is
required by law and ethics and none of this would have happened. The
assistant manager of the Value City store in Swansea Illinois, Edie
Brinkman, has gone out of her way to promote a campaign against Ms.
Rothschild and several other employees just to get the older full time
employees out of the way to score brownie points on saving money by getting
lower paid employees. Ms. Rothschild attended a meeting several months ago
where the older employees were offered a severance package to leave, Ms.
Rothschild was offered nothing. Ms. Rothschild stands to loose her home,
and has already gone through her meager savings while disabled thinking that
Schottensteins company would do the right thing.
Bad working conditions, screwing the employee out of money and benefits,
inferior products, and of course all with a mandatory smile. That is the
Schottenstein legacy to our Illinois community.
With the high holy days upon the Jewish community, redemption is just a
